Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder that lasts throughout one's life and the characteristics are:

-Impediment in social communication

-Sensory processing disorder

-Presence of repetitive behavior

Autism Spectrum Disorders are very diverse and that is why each case is unique and has very specific characteristics.

According to Autism Speaks association, in Mexico, 1 out of 115 children lives with autism.

There are several theories on the causes that generate this disorder. However, none of these have been scientifically proven, so it is concluded that scientifically there is no cause to explain this disorder yet.

Autism is not hereditary, yet the chances of suffering from it are increased if there is a history of autism in a family. (Watch our series "Autismo Sin Mitos" here)

People with autism require an INTEGRAL intervention, which stimulates all areas of development and includes:

  • Language therapy

  • Sensory integration

  • Behavioral goals

  • Independent living skills

  • Academic objectives

  • Social Skills

At Abriendo Posibilidades we design psycho-educational plans that are appropriate for the need of each child.

Starting at  the age of 6 months, a multidisciplinary team specialized in neuro-development are able to issue a diagnosis of autism.

Parents should look for signs such as:

  • Lack or poor social interaction

  • Repetitive behaviors or movements

  • Delay in language acquisition

  • Fixation on objects

  • Unconventional use of toys

  • Poor eye contact

  • Crying for no apparent reason

If your son or daughter has three or more of these characteristics, contact your pediatrician.
